Tips For Troubleshooting Shadow Copy Service Errors

Recently, some of our users reported that they encountered an error with the Shadow Copy Service.

This clearly shows the problemswhen event ID 8019, 20, 8193, or 12302 is logged in the Application log. You receive error 0x8004230F or 0x80004002.

Symptoms

On a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer that is running the Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS), you notice one of the following symptoms:

  • If you need to perform an online backup using the NTBackup tool, the following times are recorded in the application log:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: NTBackup
    Event ID: 8019
    Description: Operation completed: Warnings or errors encountered. See the backup for more details.

    Note

    Viewing the Stop Gap log file now displays the following information:

    Failed to create full snapshot: 0xffffffff

  • If you access volume condos and then access shadow copies, you get one with the following error messages:

    Error 0x8004230F: The shadow copy provider encountered a run-time error while trying toDo not approximate the specified operation.

    Error 0x80004002: This GUI is not supported

  • One of the following events will be logged in the application log:

    Event Source: VSS
    Event ID: 20
    Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service Error: A component required by the Volume Shadow Copy Service is not registered. This could have happened when setting up an error during Windows setup or when creating the shadow copy provider. Error returned by CoCreateInstance in state named CLSID faf53cc4-bd73-4e36-83f1-2b23f46e513e and VSSEvent: [0x80040154].

    Description: Volume Copy Service Error: A critical component is required and the Volume Copy Service has not yet been registered. This can happen if an error occurred while creating Windows or installing the shadow copy provider. Error returned by CoCreateInstance on class with CLSID faf53cc4-bd73-4e36-83f1-2b23f46e513e and name VSSEvent: [0x80004002].

    Description: Volume Shadow Copy Service failed. Apparently, there was an internal inconsistency when trying to contact the authors of the shadow copy service. Finally, verify that the Event Service and the copy of the Volume Shadow Copy Service are properly managed.

    1. Click Start, click Run, type followed by cmd, then click OK.

    2. How do I fix error 0x800423f4?

      To fix my mistake, temporarily disable the backup deployment service (volume checkpoint) and run the guest backup experiment. If that succeeds, enable the service again and the next guest backup should still succeed.

      At the command prompt, enter commands to apply them. Press Enter after each command.
